Workshop in Grasse, France

Grasse Workshop

by Gillian Goldberger

Catherine Casse invited me to her school in Grasse, South of France, to take exams for her children and adult students and to give a one-day workshop. Usually this event takes place in June but owing to the dates of holiday weekends this year we decided on a date in mid-May, which coincided with the film festival in Cannes! A busy time of year for all, but nonetheless a good group of all ages and abilities came together for a day of colours, combinations and choreography. Some of the participants had never done MMM before but everyone joined in and tried out everything on offer.

The exams in the following week went well and in between I was able to enjoy some free time, so I went to visit Sonja Couzy who lives nearby on the Côte d’Azur and we spent some enjoyable hours discussing our recent visit to Japan and all sorts of MMM stories from the past. This part of France is a wonderful location steeped in dance and art history – I chose Antibes this time, to visit Picasso’s workplace, now a museum and gallery, and Cagnes-sur-Mer where Renoir lived and worked.

Another beautiful week (though the weather and the French trains were not on my side this time!) and Catherine’s school can now prepare for the end-of-year show at the end of June, for which I wish them all success.
