What Is MMM

Margaret Morris Movement (MMM) is a unique system of exercise, dance and movement training which achieves a perfect balance between set exercises and free movement expression. The exercises are aimed at increasing mobility in every part of the body, as well as developing suppleness, strength and stamina – according to the individual level of performance. Each exercise is performed to specially selected music and is a balanced phrase of movement with one or more physiological aims – good to look at and satisfying to perform.

What is an MMM class like?

MMM classes begin with a series of simple exercises and movements, set to music, including a breathing pattern, which will start to train the body in balance, coordination, suppleness and strength. The exercises develop through short sequences that progress into longer pieces of work, and in each stage of development, dance and exercise build upon the previous level.  Margaret wanted people to dance for health and pleasure, but she realised the need for a system through which dancers progressed, similar to dance grades – she called them ‘Colours’.

While some people want to progress through the ‘Colours’, MMM classes are open to all, and are enjoyed by a cross section of people of all ages and backgrounds. It is appreciated by those who want a more formal dance training as well as those who want to move and dance without the constraints of a syllabus. It encourages the enjoyment of expressive elements of dance as well as the health benefits of ‘moving the body’.
